Easy Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern: Striped Blue and White

This easy crochet baby blanket pattern uses DK yarn, a 4 mm hook, and a reversible border. Full written instructions with stitch counts.

This easy crochet baby blanket pattern is beginner friendly, and it works up quicker than you’d expect. Plan on about seven hours. You’ll crochet blue and white stripes, then add a ribbed border that looks the same on both sides. The same stitch pattern makes a cardigan too, so a matching set is possible.

The blanket ends up around 41 inches square with the border. Before the border, it’s about 36 inches.

Yarn and hook

You’ll need four balls of DK (double knitting) yarn, two white and two blue. Each ball is 100 g and 330 m. Use a 4 mm hook, a yarn needle, and a stitch counter if you have one. No counter? A scrap of contrasting yarn works for marking your chains. For a baby girl, pink and white looks lovely, and one color works too.

Terms are US: ch is chain, sl st is slip stitch, sc is single crochet, dc is double crochet, FPdc is front post double crochet, and BPdc is back post double crochet.

The chain count must be a multiple of 3. This blanket uses 150, which measures about 36 inches.

The blanket

Start with blue and chain 150, marking the chains as you count.

Row 1. Turn the chain to the back side. Skip the first 3 chains and work a dc in the 4th. Those skipped chains count as your first dc. Put a dc in every chain after that, and you’ll finish with 148 dc.

Row 2. Ch 3 (it counts as a dc) and turn. Dc in the next dc, so you have two dc, then ch 3.

Now work a dc in each of the next 3 dc, but stop each one with the last loop still on the hook. You’ll have 4 loops on the hook. Pull through all 4, then ch 3. Repeat that across.

To end the row, ch 3. Then work a dc in the last dc and another in the last chain (the third one), again leaving the last loop of each on the hook. Pull through all 3 loops.

Row 3. Ch 3 (counts as a dc), then ch 2 more, which makes 5 chains. Turn. Sc in the ch-3 space. Then ch 4 and sc in the next ch-3 space, and keep repeating that across.

At the end, ch 4 and sc in the last chain space. Finish with ch 2 and a dc in the last dc.

Row 4. The first three rows are blue. Cut the blue yarn and join the white. Ch 3 and turn. Dc in the first chain space, then work 3 dc in every ch-4 space across. Finish the row with 3 dc in the last chain space and 1 dc in the third chain. The row starts with 2 dc and ends with 2 dc, and you’ll have 148 dc.

Row 5. Ch 3 (counts as a dc) and turn. Dc in each dc across, putting the last one in the top of the last 3-chain. It’s the same as Row 1, so you’re back to 148 dc.

Rows 6 and 7. Repeat Row 2, then Row 3.

The stripes

White takes four rows (Rows 4 to 7). After that, switch back to blue for four rows. Row 8 starts like this: ch 3, turn, dc in the chain space, then 3 dc in each chain space. You need 148 dc by the end of the row.

Only those four rows repeat. The color order goes:

  • 3 rows of blue at the start
  • 4 rows of white
  • 4 rows of blue
  • more stripes the same way, until the blanket is the size you want

End with blue, on a dc row like the first row. The finished blanket in this pattern has 73 rows, with 10 blue stripes and 9 white ones. It measures about 36 inches before the border.

The border

The border has five rounds: blue, white, blue, white, and blue.

Round 1 (blue). Ch 3 and turn. Work a dc in each dc across.

At each corner, work 1 more dc in the last dc of the side, then 2 dc, ch 1, and 2 more dc, all in the same space. That’s 4 dc with a chain 1 in the middle.

Down the row-end edges, work 2 dc in each row-end space. A full color line has 8 dc, and the first blue line has 6. Each side should have 150 dc. Join with a sl st in the third chain.

Round 2 (white). Take out the slip stitch and go through the third chain. Hold both yarns behind the hook and pull the white through the 2 loops. Ch 3, then alternate an FPdc in the next dc with a BPdc in the next.

At a corner, work an FPdc, then a BPdc. When 2 dc are left, put an FPdc in each one. In the chain space, work 2 dc, ch 2, and 2 more dc. After the corner, FPdc in the first dc, BPdc in the next, then FPdc and BPdc again. Finish each corner with an FPdc. Join with a sl st in the third chain.

Round 3 (blue). Put the white down and pull the blue through the loop. Ch 3, then FPdc in the next dc and BPdc in the next. From here the round works FPdc over FPdc and BPdc over BPdc.

At a corner, work an FPdc. With 2 dc left, BPdc in the first and FPdc in the last. In the chain space, work 2 dc, ch 2, and 2 more dc. After the corner, FPdc in the first dc and BPdc in the next, then carry on with FPdc over FPdc and BPdc over BPdc. The first and last dc at every corner are always FPdc. Join in the third chain, drop the blue, and pick up the white.

Round 4 (white). Ch 3 and work it the same as Round 3, corners included. Join with a sl st in the third chain, then cut the white.

Round 5 (blue). Ch 3 and work FPdc over FPdc and BPdc over BPdc again. At a corner, work an FPdc, BPdc in the next dc, and FPdc in the last. In the chain space, work 3 dc. Then FPdc in the first dc after the corner and BPdc in the next.

Join with a sl st in the third chain, cut the yarn, and weave in the ends with your yarn needle. With the border, the blanket is about 41 inches square, and both sides of the border look the same.

Matching pieces

The same pattern works for a baby cardigan. The video’s creator also made a hat in four sizes (0 to 12 months), socks, and a teddy bear with a 2.5 mm hook and two rounds.

That’s the whole blanket. If you make one, tell us which colors you picked in the comments.
